Chase February Spotify playlist: curated by Chibi Ichigo
The Chase Spotify playlist gets updated every month by a new curator. This month, we chose the 'new jewel of Belgian hip-hop' Chibi Ichigo. Also known as Sabina Nurijeva, the young Russian-Belgian rapper is effortlessly wrapping us around her finger with a refreshing mix of Russian, English and Dutch hip-hop. She also scored respect points in the scene through collaborations with fellow rappers Krisy and Berry on her latest EP 'Legenda'. Hit the follow button on our Spotify account to listen to Chibi Ichigo's favorite tracks of the moment and to stay up to date on next month's playlists!

YOUR PLAYLIST CONTAINS MANY LANGUAGES, EVEN KOREAN. HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIKED INTERNATIONAL MUSIC?
Chibi Ichigo: "Absolutely. I have a great love for languages but don't necessarily feel the need to understand the words. Through the instruments and beats, I can sense the vibe and get the story behind it. That's what I like about music: it's the language of the world."
DO YOU CONSIDER RAPPING IN RUSSIAN AS A STRUGGLE OR AN ADDED VALUE?
Chibi Ichigo: "As a singer who raps in Russian, English, and Dutch, I personally enjoy not always being understood. It's a form of protection: I can say what I want without having to be afraid of people understanding me. But I try to let go of that now because there are things I really want people to hear. That's why my next EP 'Bloei' will be almost entirely in Dutch. It's about the personal feeling I have of blooming, not only career-orientated but also in my private life. This flowering process is the first phase of life, something very vulnerable. I realize that there is a lot of strength behind vulnerability, and that's why I want to let go of my form of protection and sing in Dutch."
ARE THE SONGS ON YOUR PLAYLIST INSPIRATION FOR YOUR OWN MUSIC?
Chibi Ichigo: "Not really. Apart from the Brussels hip-hop band 'Stikstof', I don't use music as inspiration for my own work. I mainly get my inspiration from my life and experiences. That's why rapping in Dutch would work better for me: I think and feel in Dutch and less in Russian. My mother is the only person I speak Russian with and often helped me with my texts. Which Russian words described my feelings better, which pronunciation was the best, things like that. I couldn't be completely independent. That's why I am excited to continue in Dutch and to express my experiences freely."
WE ALSO HEAR SOME JAZZ IN YOUR PLAYLIST, JUST LIKE ON YOUR EP 'LEGENDA'. HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE GENRE?
Chibi Ichigo: "My love for jazz is very unconscious. I feel good when I listen to the genre, and I think that's why it also comes back in my own music. I really appreciate throwback songs like Billie Holiday's 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street', which is also on the playlist. When I'm seventy years old, I would love to become a jazz singer and play in sold-out venues! I can really imagine that."
Chibi Ichigo's first track of her new EP 'Bloei' will be released on February 28!
