UNOS over haar grootste uitdagingen als producer
Met veel trots stellen we jullie voor aan het nieuwste major talent in de Belgische producersscene: UNOS. Steffi komt uit Sint-Niklaas en schotelt je hypnotiserende hiphop en future beats voor. Opgepikt door the main man Lefto heeft ze ondertussen al gedraaid op Studio Brussel, All Eyes on Hiphop, BRUZZ, Filter, PUUR., KRANKENHAUS en onze eigen Chase livestream. Made In Belgium, in de Gentse Vooruit, wordt ongetwijfeld een nieuw hoogtepunt in haar prille carrière. Wij zochten haar op, benieuwd naar haar inspiratiebronnen, werkwijze en verdere doelen.

Wanneer werd je wakker en dacht je: 'nu ga ik muziek maken'?
Toen ik Tokimonsta voor de eerste keer had zien optreden in de Nijdrop, enkele jaren geleden. Nadat ze afsloot met de track Breath On My Contacts, had ik iets van: 'Damn, I want to make beats too!' (lacht)
Hoe zou je jouw stijl omschrijven?
Hmm. Speels? Mijn hart ligt bij hiphop, maar ik wijk graag uit naar andere genres. Momenteel ben ik nog volop mijn sound aan het ontwikkelen, dus het kan nog alle kanten uit.
Wat is de grootste uitdaging tijdens de shows of tijdens het producen?
Tijdens shows is dat ontspannen en gewoon fun hebben. Tijdens het producen is dat vaak mijn perfectionisme. Ik kan echt uren blijven tweaken.
Wie of wat inspireert jou?
Mijn omgeving en de mensen die ik ontmoet, inspireren mij enorm. Mijn grootste held is zonder twijfel mijn kleine broer. (lacht)
Heb je een bepaalde routine wanneer je aan een nieuwe track begint?
Ja, min of meer. Ik pruts gewoon wat met geluiden en als ik iets interessants hoor, maak ik er een draft van. Na enkele dagen herbeluister ik die drafts, zodat ik er met een fris oor opnieuw naar kan luisteren en dan kan uitkiezen aan welke ik wil verderwerken.
Merk je dat je als vrouw anders wordt behandeld in de muziekscene, of heb je daar geen last van?
Nee, daar heb ik echt geen last van. Uiteindelijk maakt het ook helemaal niet uit wat je geslacht is, muziek is muziek. Of om het met de woorden van een goeie vriend te zeggen: “Als het dope is, is het dope!”
Wat hoop je nog te bereiken?
Beter worden in wat ik doe en mensen kunnen inspireren.
Heb je nog een laatste advies voor wie in jouw voetsporen wil treden?
Go for it! Wees een spons en doe iets met de input die je krijgt.
Wil je UNOS aan het werk zien? Op zondag 9 oktober is ze een van de geselecteerden voor Made in Belgium, Lefto's gratis "introductieavond voor wat nieuw en fascinerend is in de Belgische scene". Ze deelt de line-up met Moka Boka, DVTCH NORRIS, Roshima, NO EXP., Audri en DJ Azer.

Chase is very proud to introduce you to the newest upcoming major talent in the Belgian producer’s scene named UNOS. Her friends call her Steffi and she serves flawlessly hypnotizing hiphop/future beats. Picked up by the main man Lefto, she has already played on Studio Brussels, All Eyes on Hiphop, BRUZZ, Filter, PUUR., KRANKENHAUS and our own Chase livestream. We are beyond curious about it! When did you wake up and realised ‘I want to make music now’?
It was when I saw Tokimonsta performing a few years ago at Nijldrop. After she dropped her track “Breath On My Contacts”, I was like “Damn, I want to make beats too!" (laughs)
How would you describe your style?
I would say playful? (laughs). My fundamential lays with hiphop but I like to reach out to other genres. At the moment, I’m fully developing my sound so it still can go in every direction.
What is the biggest challenge during the shows/producing?
During shows it’s relaxing and just having fun. During the producing process, it’s very often my perfectionism. I can tweak for hours.
Who inspires you the most? Who is your biggest hero?
My environment and the people I meet inspire me a lot. My biggest hero is without doubt my little brother (laughs).
Do you have a routine when you start with making a track?
Yes sort of. I just mess with some sounds and when I hear something interesting, I make a draft of it. After a few days I relisten to these drafts. This way, I can hear these with a fresh ear and pick out the ones I will proceed with.
Have you ever experienced being treated ‘differently’ as a woman in the music?
No, never actually. Eventually it doesn’t matter what our gender is. Music will be music at the end of the day. A good friend of mine always says: “If it’s dope, it’s dope!” (laughs)
What do you hope to achieve?
Become better at what I do and inspire people with it.
Any advice for the people who want to follow your footsteps?
Go for it! Be a sponge and use the input you receive!
