The goal
The podcast Voice color is a collaboration between Story, Chase Creative, and In-Agent. The latter organization is responsible for the integration policy of the city of Ghent. Every day, many “new Ghent residents” visit Ghent. There, they register for Dutch language courses or civic integration courses, or they receive information about leisure activities and studying in Ghent.

Besides their questions, many people also bring inspiring, funny, and touching stories. In-gent wanted to share the stories of these newcomers with a broader audience and came up with the idea of creating a podcast. They wanted to focus on the dreams and ambitions of these newcomers rather than stories about fleeing their country or the racism they face. In this way, they wanted to use the power of storytelling to connect people.
Our social story for the podcast Voice Color
For Voice color, we recorded stories from new Ghent residents who deserve to be heard. The newcomers were given carte blanche to fill their podcast episode with their own story and narrative voice. The result is a collection of small and big stories from newcomers, each with their own “voice color” in their new language, Dutch. For example, we have Camila, who tells a story about her hair and the different social norms surrounding it in her home country Brazil and her new home country Belgium.

The volunteers from Relaas coached the storytellers to map out their own storyline. They looked for small anecdotes in their life stories that also say something about being a newcomer in Ghent. Chase Creative helped with the strategy, recording, and audio editing. Because the language was a major challenge, we made sure people could tell their story in a safe cocoon. We coached them several times to tell their story, which allowed us to edit it into one smooth narrative. In this way, we helped people who were not yet fully comfortable with the Dutch language to create a final story they could be proud of.

The result
The Voice color podcast was launched during a live event on March 8 at Herberg Macharius in Ghent. The stories will be used in various contexts at other events, in the welcome package for new Ghent residents, in Dutch language classes, and new in-Ghent ambassadors will also listen to the stories. In this way, the podcast gives new Ghent residents insight into how other newcomers built a life in Ghent. In-gent already provides a lot of information and guidance, but these stories were a great addition to their services because they are inspiring and memorable.
